Mr. Norquist: I’m older than you, and a conservative. I’ve been conservative longer than you. The “no tax increase” pledge is stupid. Here’s a quick example: there will be 80 million Americans by 2020 over 65. Alzheimers’ is a horrifying ailment, with the potential of completing overwhelming the U.S. medical system and Medicare budget. What if the President and Congress want to launch a Manhattan Project to cure Alzheimers at a cost of, say $100 billion, and want to raise everyone’s taxes $25 a year to pay for it? Are the Republicans supposed to oppose that because of a pledge? It’s stupid. Get out of the way.
